British P 1842 Socket Bayonet, Lovell Catch. Socket bayonet designed to be used on the Brown Bess converted to percussion muskets Pattern 1842 & 1845 Extra Service. Inspector & maker marked, "S. HILL"  & stamped  with an "EX.", (Extra Service). Age pitting overall. This bayonet was very short lived. Soon replaced by the Pattern 1853 rifle & socket bayonet with locking ring.
