Description

US Purple Heart. Revived by General Douglas MacArthur on 22nd February, 1932. Originally instituted by General George Washington on August 7, 1782 in a cloth version. Currently awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to U.S. civilians, who, while serving with the Armed Forces, are wounded as a direct result of enemy action. It is the only award which does not depend on a superior's recommendation or approval and represents the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation.
